Senior frontend engineer from India hired in Vancouver:
Get inspired by Sanchit’s story!
The journey to getting hired abroad
Sanchit comes from a family of travelers and immigrants. He has relatives in the US, Canada and the UK. Inspired by his father’s adventures around the globe, the software engineer had his path laid out for him. “It was pretty much clear in my mind that I had to move abroad”, he says.
If you talk to Sanchit you will notice his enthusiasm and energy. But don’t get fooled by his easy going disposition. Determination is the name of the game for our guy. Not long after finishing college Sanchit moved to Bangalore because “it’s the Sillicon Valley of India”. That’s where he started working on his dreams. “I didn’t even care about the money. I liked the work. I was there because of my passion”.
A north-american mentor he was working with at the time was the one to suggest Canada or Australia as interesting options for relocation. He signed up for VanHack even before completing the required 4+ years of experience and did everything in his power to ramp up his profile.
Then, as chance would have it, Sanchit met with VanHack’s CEO Ilya Brotzky in a hiring event. At first, it all seemed too good to be true, the engineer says, but it wasn’t. “After that I attended the Calgary Economic Development event in September 2019. I am so grateful to VanHack for giving me that opportunity. It was my first international trip and all the documentation was sponsored by VanHack”. During the event. Sanchit had interviews with tech companies and met with other candidates from different countries.
After some years working on his dream, the big break came in 2020, when Sanchit started the hiring process with his current employer in Vancouver, Canada. He says VanHack assisted in over the years and that knowing about other candidates getting hired helped him when things got hard. “It’s a mental struggle. You wonder sometimes why things are not working. These success stories help. At the time, [VanHacker] Shara recorded a success story talking about the many jobs she applied to, so she taught me how to stay resilient. Her success story helped me a lot“.
It is so cool that Sanchit’s story can now also inspire other candidates!

Let's dive in. 00;00;20;29 - 00;00;25;07 So, just as a quick intro, tell us about yourself. 00;00;25;08 - 00;00;25;22 Who are you? 00;00;25;22 - 00;00;28;17 Where you from? Very cool. 00;01;15;25 - 00;01;17;18 So tell us about your, your VanHack story. 00;01;17;18 - 00;01;18;15 Like when did it start? 00;01;18;15 - 00;01;21;11 When did this idea of living abroad come to you? 00;01;22;26 - 00;01;24;13 So it was always there. 00;01;24;13 - 00;01;28;17 I mean, since my childhood, I started in the international school 00;01;28;19 - 00;01;31;26 where people were not just from India, people from like different 00;01;31;26 - 00;01;34;28 different parts of another Asian countries like Bangkok 00;01;34;28 - 00;01;37;05 or like even neighboring countries like nearby know. 00;01;37;12 - 00;01;39;24 So I have like been into that kind of a schooling. 00;01;39;24 - 00;01;44;25 I come from a city where education is like really at school. 00;01;45;14 - 00;01;47;23 A lot of celebrities might have started over there as well. 00;01;48;04 - 00;01;50;24 So, yeah, good education, everything. 00;01;50;24 - 00;01;54;10 My close family members was settling in the US, Canada, U.K. 00;01;54;11 - 00;01;58;14 for twenty, thirty years, they used to visit us back in my country. 00;01;58;14 - 00;02;01;05 Right? So from there, it was quite certain. 00;02;01;06 - 00;02;04;26 Even my dad, I mean, he has traveled around the world. 00;02;05;06 - 00;02;07;24 He has been to Canada, before. 00;02;09;04 - 00;02;10;16 So, yeah, it was also 00;02;10;16 - 00;02;14;14 it was pretty much clear in my mind that I have to move abroad. 00;02;15;17 - 00;02;17;24 So here I am. 00;02;17;24 - 00;02;18;27 Yeah, you are! 00;02;18;27 - 00;02;21;13 Just for everyone to know where are in the world are you right now? 00;02;21;15 - 00;02;22;27 Like, where is joining us from? 00;02;22;27 - 00;02;25;19 So I am joining you, from Vancouver. 00;02;26;25 - 00;02;29;02 Cool. Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. 00;02;29;03 - 00;02;30;03 North America. 00;02;30;03 - 00;02;30;13 Yeah. 00;02;30;13 - 00;02;33;13 It's the best place in Canada to be, I would say. 00;02;34;27 - 00;02;38;09 I'm a little biased, so but there's a lot of great, great places. 00;02;38;09 - 00;02;40;15 I was just in Calgary last week and going to Toronto next week, 00;02;40;27 - 00;02;44;24 a lot of great places in Canada all over the world as well, Europe, et cetera. 00;02;44;27 - 00;02;47;28 Yeah, I grew up here, so I have to agree with you on that one. 00;02;48;12 - 00;02;49;08 Yeah. Cool. 00;02;49;08 - 00;02;51;14 So how was the job search before VanHack? 00;02;51;14 - 00;02;54;10 Like, how was? Like, you wanted to go abroad your whole life. 00;02;54;21 - 00;02;56;16 Like, when did you really start looking for a job? 00;02;56;16 - 00;02;59;20 And how was it like that before you found VanHack? 00;03;00;06 - 00;03;01;12 It happened this way: 00;03;01;12 - 00;03;04;06 Let's say, if I talk about my background a bit. 00;03;04;19 - 00;03;09;01 So professionally speaking, like when I was doing my undergrad, right? 00;03;09;12 - 00;03;12;13 I'm a big tech and coming to science and engineering, and I started 00;03;12;13 - 00;03;15;11 from like a good university back in my country. 00;03;15;21 - 00;03;16;29 I was associated with 00;03;16;29 - 00;03;20;28 like IBM, the Center of Excellence, and I was also part of like Google. 00;03;20;28 - 00;03;23;05 I was like Google student ambassador. 00;03;23;05 - 00;03;25;23 So everything was great professionally. 00;03;25;23 - 00;03;29;15 And as my first job, I mean, it was very clear in mind, 00;03;29;15 - 00;03;31;29 if I have to be in India, I have to be in Bangalore 00;03;32;10 - 00;03;34;16 because Bangalore is the Silicon Valley of India. 00;03;34;16 - 00;03;35;04 Right? 00;03;35;05 - 00;03;40;01 So if Bangalore otherwise abroad, like most likely US, I would say. 00;03;40;12 - 00;03;42;12 What about like Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai? 00;03;42;12 - 00;03;44;06 No no 00;03;44;06 - 00;03;46;02 Those are just weak 00;03;46;02 - 00;03;50;26 So like, Bangalore is the place to be and I mean, I like cold weather as well. 00;03;51;04 - 00;03;55;11 So Bangalore has like the best weather conditions, 00;03;55;11 - 00;03;58;22 you know? So I may liking was more or less Bangalore. 00;03;59;05 - 00;04;04;26 So, yeah, straight up after the college, I spent certain six months internship 00;04;04;26 - 00;04;08;28 in Delhi, NCR, Northern part of India, and that's where I'm from as well. 00;04;09;13 - 00;04;13;02 So then I got this opportunity with Accenture, 00;04;13;06 - 00;04;16;22 like you have an opening in Bangalore, come and join us. 00;04;17;08 - 00;04;20;12 So that was I think I joined the company in October 2014, 00;04;21;01 - 00;04;23;01 and then I relocated to Bangalore. 00;04;23;01 - 00;04;26;17 Accenture, I think was the best of the best time, 00;04;26;18 - 00;04;29;11 even though, you know, people created it as a service company. 00;04;29;21 - 00;04;33;06 But a team that I was in, we were literally in a startup mode. 00;04;33;09 - 00;04;37;18 We was like so fast and so much of like, you know, 00;04;37;21 - 00;04;40;20 like business time lines that you need to follow for the product, right? 00;04;41;04 - 00;04;42;23 I didn't work for a client. 00;04;42;23 - 00;04;44;25 I work for an internal team. 00;04;44;25 - 00;04;47;11 So we were focused on building essential products. 00;04;47;11 - 00;04;47;28 Right? 00;04;48;02 - 00;04;51;05 So and my whole journey in 00;04;51;05 - 00;04;54;28 like Accenture, like I was always guided by my US mentors. 00;04;55;05 - 00;04;57;05 and then deal with India management a lot. 00;04;57;16 - 00;04;59;22 So the whole guidance from the start, right? 00;04;59;22 - 00;05;01;25 It has been from US folks itself. 00;05;02;12 - 00;05;06;22 So for years I was never concerned about what money I'm making. 00;05;07;06 - 00;05;09;00 I was too workaholic 00;05;09;00 - 00;05;12;19 when people used to tell me, man, like go search into a product company. 00;05;12;19 - 00;05;14;19 You can go and like, Why are you here? 00;05;15;03 - 00;05;16;21 I'm like, No, I like to work. 00;05;16;21 - 00;05;19;02 I'm here because of my passion, right? 00;05;19;14 - 00;05;20;17 Money doesn't matter to me. 00;05;21;23 - 00;05;23;10 And there we go. 00;05;23;10 - 00;05;27;05 Our next four years, four days I spent in Accenture, the U.S. 00;05;27;05 - 00;05;28;19 visa didn't work out. 00;05;28;19 - 00;05;30;26 And so then my U.S. 00;05;30;26 - 00;05;36;00 mentors itself, you know, told me: Man, why are you relying on the H-1B system? 00;05;36;00 - 00;05;39;17 Just go and look for Canadian immigration system. 00;05;39;22 - 00;05;43;07 So it was my very close U.S. mentor. 00;05;43;07 - 00;05;45;08 I never met him in my life. 00;05;45;08 - 00;05;49;02 And he, but I always worked under his guidance from like four years. 00;05;49;02 - 00;05;49;17 Right. 00;05;49;29 - 00;05;53;27 He told me the route to Canada or Australia 00;05;54;00 - 00;05;58;12 and kind of been North American things or I liking 00;05;59;13 - 00;05;59;23 from. 00;05;59;23 - 00;06;04;21 So this dream he implanted that dream in December 2017. 00;06;05;02 - 00;06;08;17 Since then, January 2018, I go start doing 00;06;08;18 - 00;06;13;06 my education credentials, my English and all that stuff. 00;06;13;15 - 00;06;14;01 Right. 00;06;14;01 - 00;06;17;01 I think within a matter of four or five months, I mean, I wrote I think 00;06;17;01 - 00;06;20;28 three or four times I was on CLB 8 and all I achieved CLB 9 00;06;20;28 - 00;06;24;22 So I was having only bachelor's degree because I never felt 00;06;24;22 - 00;06;27;11 the need for master's. I mean, I was good at my job, right? 00;06;27;11 - 00;06;28;01 Right. Yeah. 00;06;28;01 - 00;06;33;06 I'm more of a tech person, so I like coding, from there 00;06;33;17 - 00;06;34;17 What I can say is 00;06;35;25 - 00;06;36;06 than there 00;06;36;06 - 00;06;38;28 was no looking back, even though I was still CLB 9 00;06;39;08 - 00;06;42;17 and I was thinking for 2019 on that it will nominate 400 00;06;42;17 - 00;06;47;11 plus tech draw that didn't happen, right then I think I started looking into the jobs. 00;06;47;18 - 00;06;51;01 So then VanHack happened, I mean almost 00;06;51;01 - 00;06;54;17 since 2018, I can say I started my job search with that. 00;06;55;02 - 00;06;56;06 I was applying for a job. 00;06;56;06 - 00;06;57;05 I was, but I think that was 00;06;57;05 - 00;07;00;15 that time was having three and a half, four years experience and people 00;07;00;17 - 00;07;03;29 were like more getting hired at six or seven years experience. 00;07;04;01 - 00;07;05;18 So that wasn't working out for me. 00;07;05;18 - 00;07;08;14 And then I think you came on October on India, right? 00;07;08;14 - 00;07;11;02 Like I met you like in Bengaluru. 00;07;11;02 - 00;07;11;26 Yeah, yeah, yeah. 00;07;11;26 - 00;07;16;00 I, met you in person you thought, you thought it sounds too good to be true, 00;07;16;13 - 00;07;18;03 you know, like, but it wasn't. 00;07;18;03 - 00;07;21;13 So then the next thing, next thing like after meeting you is like 00;07;22;04 - 00;07;26;17 I attended the Calgary Economic Development event in September 2019. 00;07;26;21 - 00;07;31;11 Yes. I came there and that was again, 00;07;31;11 - 00;07;35;04 you know, I'm so grateful to VanHack, for giving me that opportunity. 00;07;35;12 - 00;07;38;08 And so my first international trip 00;07;39;15 - 00;07;42;06 all the documentation, sponsor of VanHack 00;07;42;24 - 00;07;47;13 it was an amazing journey, so during 4 days we attended that event stressful 00;07;47;13 - 00;07;52;10 I bet on the job interviews, so yeah and I know how tough it was 00;07;52;10 - 00;07;57;11 I during that time but and fortunately or you know like you also organized 00;07;57;12 - 00;08;00;07 a couple of events in Calgary you took us to Banff 00;08;00;07 - 00;08;02;12 and everything you coordinated all those things 00;08;02;12 - 00;08;05;04 I mean you made that experience really really amazing. 00;08;05;12 - 00;08;08;13 So, and they were like a lot of good guys. 00;08;08;13 - 00;08;10;15 So especially Topojit, right? 00;08;10;15 - 00;08;12;04 Like he came and conquered. 00;08;12;04 - 00;08;13;26 He went into us and said: 00;08;13;26 - 00;08;16;04 Here I am working for Microsoft. 00;08;16;18 - 00;08;18;29 Yeah, he's getting hired, right? 00;08;18;29 - 00;08;19;20 Oh, yeah. 00;08;19;20 - 00;08;21;18 And then there's another guy from Brazil. 00;08;21;18 - 00;08;23;04 I think Lucas, right? 00;08;23;04 - 00;08;25;22 He was a really gem of a person from Brazil, I guess. 00;08;25;22 - 00;08;30;06 So who are hired for one of the good startup companies, I can say treaty. 00;08;30;11 - 00;08;31;07 Company. 00;08;31;07 - 00;08;33;10 So yeah, everything was good. 00;08;34;07 - 00;08;36;22 But the moment, I mean, like that fresh air, right? 00;08;37;19 - 00;08;39;20 In India, air quality is worst. 00;08;39;24 - 00;08;42;14 And in Calgary, that freshness of air, 00;08;43;00 - 00;08;45;17 the moment I went back to India, 00;08;45;29 - 00;08;49;18 I desired I'm like: I don't know what I'm gonna do. 00;08;49;22 - 00;08;52;09 I have to stop this walking parallel. 00;08;52;09 - 00;08;55;02 I need to focus on making this dream come true. 00;08;56;00 - 00;08;56;28 Okay. Wow. 00;08;56;28 - 00;08;58;23 And then I applied for studies. 00;08;58;23 - 00;09;00;10 I was almost all set. 00;09;00;10 - 00;09;02;00 I paid my tuition everything. 00;09;02;00 - 00;09;05;13 I got a GDip program. I think in 2020. 00;09;06;17 - 00;09;08;22 So I was all set to come to Waterloo 00;09;08;22 - 00;09;12;06 because that was more of a startup region when I was pitching Waterloo thing. 00;09;12;11 - 00;09;14;03 Right. I was all set there. 00;09;14;03 - 00;09;16;24 Fortunately, rise happened in February. 00;09;17;01 - 00;09;18;27 2021. Yeah. 00;09;18;27 - 00;09;19;21 So yeah. 00;09;19;21 - 00;09;22;24 So then there's like no looking back at all right. 00;09;24;14 - 00;09;24;29 That's awesome. 00;09;24;29 - 00;09;27;21 While it's, it's incredible a lot of a lot of really great details there. 00;09;27;21 - 00;09;29;28 So let's, let's jump into the interview process 00;09;29;28 - 00;09;33;02 specifically with, with your current employer. 00;09;33;02 - 00;09;33;26 You know 00;09;34;15 - 00;09;36;17 how did you prepare for that? 00;09;36;17 - 00;09;38;21 How did VanHack help you prepare for that? 00;09;40;22 - 00;09;41;00 Yeah. 00;09;41;00 - 00;09;43;14 Just tell us about that experience. 00;09;43;28 - 00;09;47;23 So yeah, I mean, it was already two, three years when I was like already 00;09;47;23 - 00;09;52;04 preparing for the international jobs and I think finally even before like when 00;09;52;05 - 00;09;56;02 I've done into India, I was also doing interviews in Germany 00;09;56;02 - 00;09;59;25 and or like in certain parts of Europe remotely during the COVID times. 00;09;59;25 - 00;10;00;14 Right? 00;10;00;14 - 00;10;03;20 So we were in the job search I was already prepared. 00;10;03;25 - 00;10;07;21 And in the India itself before the current 00;10;08;01 - 00;10;10;26 VanHack company sponsorship happened. 00;10;11;09 - 00;10;14;18 Before that, I just got an offer from a very 00;10;14;22 - 00;10;19;12 I can see innovation company, a startup backed up by Gojek, 00;10;19;24 - 00;10;22;27 which was a really, really great city, everything. 00;10;23;15 - 00;10;28;19 And when this company happened, I had to, you know, apologize to them 00;10;28;19 - 00;10;32;16 that saying like, I couldn't join the company because this is my dream. 00;10;32;16 - 00;10;35;21 That I've been into like last two, two and a half, three years, right? 00;10;35;21 - 00;10;36;01 Yeah. 00;10;36;01 - 00;10;39;02 So I really apologize to let you know at this 00;10;39;02 - 00;10;41;18 very last moment, but I'm going to go for the my dream. 00;10;42;06 - 00;10;44;10 So everything is going good. 00;10;45;05 - 00;10;45;14 Nice. 00;10;45;14 - 00;10;47;08 So, so like with, with your current employer, 00;10;47;08 - 00;10;50;19 now that you're working here, like, how did you feel when you got that, 00;10;50;24 - 00;10;52;29 that offer? Like how, how was that also. 00;10;53;19 - 00;10;55;15 Really it was over-the-moon feeling. 00;10;56;14 - 00;10;59;13 And the best thing I can say 00;11;00;16 - 00;11;02;19 this happened in February 2021 00;11;02;19 - 00;11;04;24 and the moment we started working, 00;11;05;07 - 00;11;07;22 it was the project that was there. 00;11;08;08 - 00;11;10;12 It was core front engineering. 00;11;10;12 - 00;11;14;04 We had to do a thing called UI unification. 00;11;14;04 - 00;11;19;21 So what we had is like, differentiates products and we had to 00;11;19;21 - 00;11;23;14 unify, basically you think off like Amazon e-commerce, right? 00;11;23;24 - 00;11;26;28 Like they have micro-frontend for the card for your products, 00;11;26;28 - 00;11;30;09 everything running in a one single back font, right? 00;11;30;12 - 00;11;32;05 That's what our goal was. 00;11;32;05 - 00;11;34;24 And we wanted to achieve this within three or four months. 00;11;35;08 - 00;11;39;13 So we wanted to streamline our product so that it feels like 00;11;39;20 - 00;11;42;18 even though there are different, different apps different technologies, 00;11;42;18 - 00;11;45;25 one like we're AngularJS, Angular Fire, Angular 11 00;11;45;25 - 00;11;50;09 and even something more than React, something we were trying in NextJs, 00;11;50;19 - 00;11;54;27 but we wanted all this to run as one containerized application. 00;11;55;16 - 00;11;57;02 So that was the goal. 00;11;57;02 - 00;12;01;28 It was the toughest, toughest part, I can say very challenging I loved, 00;12;02;17 - 00;12;05;02 you know, leading that and I was given that to lead. 00;12;05;21 - 00;12;09;26 So right off the bat, I'm given this opportunity to lead. 00;12;10;05 - 00;12;13;07 I mean, I researched a lot, a lot. 00;12;13;07 - 00;12;15;19 And like I learned a lot along the way. 00;12;15;19 - 00;12;18;12 I almost, I think, oh, vote 00;12;18;12 - 00;12;21;25 across all different polls within 15 any days. Wow. 00;12;21;27 - 00;12;28;00 I almost vote with all different owners of those products in the team 00;12;28;16 - 00;12;31;29 and not just people based in Canada or people based in Poland, 00;12;31;29 - 00;12;34;07 People based in Africa and all 00;12;35;00 - 00;12;38;16 I was the one I almost covered entire teams, 00;12;38;22 - 00;12;41;22 within a few months so that was really great. 00;12;41;22 - 00;12;42;00 Again, 00;12;43;13 - 00;12;44;03 another best 00;12;44;03 - 00;12;49;20 thing was like once we did the Ui unification, I mean I won 50 00;12;49;20 - 00;12;52;26 plus recognition in that quarter that was highest 00;12;53;12 - 00;12;54;29 anybody won in that quarter. 00;12;54;29 - 00;13;00;06 Wow. I felt appreciated, you know, I felt recognized everything 00;13;00;13 - 00;13;04;06 and I'm giving my 100% more than 100%, right? 00;13;04;16 - 00;13;05;06 Yeah. 00;13;05;26 - 00;13;09;02 And I tell openly to my CTO 00;13;09;10 - 00;13;11;24 like: I'm so proud that, 00;13;12;06 - 00;13;15;02 you know, I like working with you so much. 00;13;15;02 - 00;13;18;10 Even though I'm flooded, my LinkedIn is flooded with people reaching out 00;13;18;10 - 00;13;22;18 from Microsoft, Amazon, this, that and literally lot of calls. 00;13;22;27 - 00;13;27;21 My CTO allegedly said like me, we are treating our company as a girlfriend. 00;13;27;21 - 00;13;30;03 You know, I think maybe I don't know. 00;13;30;03 - 00;13;31;26 So but yeah, everything is going great. 00;13;31;26 - 00;13;33;29 So I should be grateful to you. 00;13;33;29 - 00;13;35;22 I love I do the commitment. 00;13;35;22 - 00;13;39;14 I live up to the expectations and even exceed those expectations. 00;13;40;00 - 00;13;41;10 That's fantastic. 00;13;41;10 - 00;13;44;09 So so how about the actual, you know, the VanHack 00;13;44;09 - 00;13;47;15 Advisors like you did you do any interview prep for VanHack? 00;13;47;15 - 00;13;49;25 With VanHack? Who from VanHack helped you? Would you want to maybe share something. 00;13;50;13 - 00;13;55;23 Yeah! So, let's say since 2018, 00;13;55;23 - 00;13;59;01 When I started with VanHack, I think I came across a lot of 00;14;00;05 - 00;14;03;12 VanHack people who were dealing with different, different thoughts, 00;14;03;22 - 00;14;05;27 maybe the English thing 00;14;05;27 - 00;14;09;23 or maybe the interview job search and then the interview process. 00;14;09;29 - 00;14;11;15 I dealt with a lot of people. 00;14;11;15 - 00;14;14;21 Some are still with VanHack, maybe left for something good. 00;14;15;29 - 00;14;18;28 But I think for this particular company, Alex 00;14;19;17 - 00;14;23;28 he helped me a lot and I know it was quite a struggle. 00;14;23;28 - 00;14;28;22 So many jobs I applied to and he was always kind of rejecting me on 00;14;28;22 - 00;14;32;23 one or two points saying like, you have a service company, experience extends you. 00;14;32;23 - 00;14;36;21 So this drive, you try to give me an interview opportunity 00;14;36;21 - 00;14;38;09 and I'll do it to you. 00;14;38;09 - 00;14;43;14 So some when things started, you know, looking good, we interview people. 00;14;43;14 - 00;14;46;13 He heard positive feedback. So obviously it was a struggle. 00;14;46;13 - 00;14;48;20 I think it was not like one job I crack, right? 00;14;48;24 - 00;14;49;14 Yeah. 00;14;49;19 - 00;14;53;19 So it was a bit of mental 00;14;54;01 - 00;14;56;19 toll as well that why things are not working, you know? 00;14;57;04 - 00;15;00;29 So but yeah, I think it taught me to be more resilient 00;15;00;29 - 00;15;05;00 and especially I think at that time how these success stories also help. 00;15;05;00 - 00;15;09;28 Right at the same time, Sara, I think she recorded a success story. 00;15;09;28 - 00;15;12;04 You saying like how many jobs she applied to 00;15;12;04 - 00;15;14;11 and she taught me one thing to stay resilient. 00;15;14;18 - 00;15;14;29 Yeah. 00;15;14;29 - 00;15;18;18 And I added that resilient word in my dictionary that I have to be resilient. 00;15;18;21 - 00;15;19;07 Yeah. 00;15;19;07 - 00;15;22;18 And I think her success story inspired me a lot, 00;15;23;29 - 00;15;26;23 and I think that made me crack this interview. 00;15;26;28 - 00;15;27;07 Awesome. 00;15;27;07 - 00;15;30;20 Well, hopefully someone's watching this video and has the same inspiration 00;15;30;20 - 00;15;33;14 from some of you, and we can record a video with that person as well. 00;15;33;24 - 00;15;35;19 Yeah, I would love to. 00;15;35;19 - 00;15;38;25 So, yeah, if someone that in the future does a success successful interview 00;15;38;29 - 00;15;41;29 and say, say, Oh, I watch this actually interview and inspire me a lot as well, 00;15;42;24 - 00;15;47;08 I just looked in the database you apply to 90 jobs on VanHack 90. 00;15;47;15 - 00;15;50;26 That not the current number, I guess. Something happening 00;15;51;04 - 00;15;52;01 with my email address. 00;15;52;01 - 00;15;54;03 I would have applied a lot of jobs again. 00;15;54;10 - 00;15;54;22 Oh wow. 00;15;54;22 - 00;15;57;20 So I got a lot of on that account basically from Gmail 00;15;57;20 - 00;16;00;04 like I was changing my device and all that. 00;16;00;04 - 00;16;02;18 I see I don't have access to that email again now. 00;16;02;27 - 00;16;04;09 Oh wow. Crazy. Wow. 00;16;04;09 - 00;16;06;02 More than 100 than I guess. 00;16;06;02 - 00;16;08;14 Wow. It would be double and that. 00;16;08;14 - 00;16;09;26 Doesn't cost anything to apply, right? 00;16;09;26 - 00;16;11;07 So yeah, yeah. 00;16;11;07 - 00;16;12;18 And see what happens. You never know. 00;16;12;18 - 00;16;14;16 And this is the one job which you got out 00;16;15;18 - 00;16;17;15 your goal, so awesome. 00;16;17;15 - 00;16;20;00 How about, like, were there any times we thought about giving up 00;16;20;00 - 00;16;23;03 or any struggles you had and want to share with people about that? 00;16;24;15 - 00;16;27;03 Or a lot of times I mean, certain times 00;16;27;04 - 00;16;29;18 I was thinking like, I don't know, 00;16;30;17 - 00;16;34;09 sometimes getting a perception, like maybe people are biased or something. 00;16;34;22 - 00;16;38;13 I know the founders also from Brazil, you know, like they a lot of Brazilians are. 00;16;39;19 - 00;16;40;23 So it was like, Oh, hold on. 00;16;40;23 - 00;16;42;03 I'm not from Brazil, actually. 00;16;42;03 - 00;16;45;12 Yeah, but I'm saying that background is there, right? 00;16;45;12 - 00;16;45;20 Yeah. 00;16;45;20 - 00;16;50;10 So I mean, yeah, a lot of times you felt that maybe you're helping them a lot, 00;16;50;20 - 00;16;51;26 maybe not. 00;16;51;28 - 00;16;54;17 So, but yeah, like, no regrets on that. 00;16;54;17 - 00;16;56;17 Like, I just saying like. Of course. 00;16;56;22 - 00;16;58;28 Yeah, you. Don't talk to yourself and yeah. 00;16;59;05 - 00;17;01;11 So I thought games, but yeah. 00;17;01;11 - 00;17;05;20 And I have to admire those people, especially when I make in person, 00;17;05;20 - 00;17;07;00 especially when I hangout 00;17;07;00 - 00;17;11;18 now with like Brazilians, Colombians, I know they are like gem of a people. 00;17;12;20 - 00;17;13;06 I mean, 00;17;13;06 - 00;17;17;26 the very good thing about these people are like they are rooted don't wait 00;17;17;26 - 00;17;21;07 very humble as long as they have that competitiveness, right? 00;17;21;20 - 00;17;23;05 So I really admire the culture. 00;17;23;05 - 00;17;25;00 I have a lot of friends now like who are from. 00;17;25;00 - 00;17;30;28 I think I think Indian culture and South American culture have a very warm climates 00;17;30;28 - 00;17;36;07 and also like family oriented like this and hardworking. 00;17;36;10 - 00;17;39;10 Yeah, for sure. It is. It is nice. 00;17;39;28 - 00;17;42;24 So so tell me more, like any specific challenges 00;17;42;25 - 00;17;44;20 you have, you thought about giving out for them? 00;17;44;20 - 00;17;47;02 What what what kept you going? How did you get out of that negative? 00;17;47;02 - 00;17;48;25 So I mean. 00;17;48;25 - 00;17;52;07 So the entire thing what happened is it's not particular to VanHack, 00;17;52;15 - 00;17;55;28 but it happened during the whole Canadian dream, right? 00;17;55;28 - 00;17;56;14 Yeah. 00;17;56;14 - 00;17;59;17 Starting from December 2017 and making 00;17;59;17 - 00;18;02;19 it come true February 21. 00;18;02;23 - 00;18;04;04 Yeah. Almost. 00;18;04;04 - 00;18;08;08 I can see it three years and then and then from point 00;18;08;08 - 00;18;11;20 from February 21 till now, making it to the company. 00;18;11;20 - 00;18;12;06 Right. 00;18;12;09 - 00;18;14;10 I'm getting my permanent residency and everything. 00;18;14;10 - 00;18;16;24 I got my PR as well. You're going to say, oh that's great. 00;18;16;27 - 00;18;18;08 Yeah. So that's all good. 00;18;18;08 - 00;18;20;08 It was recent? How long did you get it? 00;18;20;08 - 00;18;23;23 Out very recently, I would say maybe a month back I can say, oh, 00;18;24;06 - 00;18;27;24 I just got my driver's license done like this week or two. 00;18;28;20 - 00;18;29;18 Oh yeah. 00;18;29;18 - 00;18;32;26 And I can see you like almost for four and a half years of this job. 00;18;32;26 - 00;18;35;07 So it's the pass. You're going to be driving the Porsche sooner or later. 00;18;35;10 - 00;18;39;07 I don't know my CEO setting though Porsche and he's saying they come by this, right? 00;18;40;23 - 00;18;42;27 So let's see what happens. 00;18;43;08 - 00;18;45;04 I've been testing vehicles and all that. 00;18;45;04 - 00;18;48;18 They coming back to like the struggles or you know, 00;18;48;20 - 00;18;51;06 like what happened is like I was applying for my PR 00;18;51;09 - 00;18;55;00 because I was thinking I will get our tech nomination from Ontario 400 00;18;55;00 - 00;18;57;02 plus used to get it. 00;18;57;02 - 00;18;59;27 In my code as a temp, I got the CLB 9 00;18;59;27 - 00;19;03;07 I got the for 2019 the moment I entered the express entry pool. 00;19;03;08 - 00;19;07;07 All the scores went through that up for 440, 441 00;19;08;01 - 00;19;09;28 I'm like, what is happening here? 00;19;09;28 - 00;19;14;19 Then I was like, I almost scan all the immigration things to try it 00;19;14;19 - 00;19;17;03 I was hearing like, oh, you can get PNP, 00;19;17;03 - 00;19;20;03 you can do paper applications, you can get this, I'm going to get that. 00;19;20;15 - 00;19;23;11 I almost scored, but I know those were more of a fraud 00;19;23;11 - 00;19;26;02 or like money making machine is nothing gets, right? 00;19;26;14 - 00;19;28;15 I've been always taught to work hard. 00;19;28;25 - 00;19;30;02 Everything will come, right? 00;19;30;02 - 00;19;34;14 Success will come, money will come, fame will come with time just be on this walk 00;19;34;14 - 00;19;38;29 with integrity that has been now bringing from there when it wasn't happening. 00;19;38;29 - 00;19;43;09 Then I came to like Calgary for the event almost. 00;19;43;09 - 00;19;44;06 And that time also 00;19;44;06 - 00;19;48;00 like a lot of times like so one company that we were interviewing with. 00;19;48;05 - 00;19;52;10 Yeah, they said like if we reject you, you're going to be notified in a day. 00;19;52;22 - 00;19;57;27 If we put you on hold, you might not hear back from us then two, three days. 00;19;58;10 - 00;19;59;17 And that was the case 00;19;59;17 - 00;20;03;08 almost, I think the opposite when for that company they got rejection 00;20;03;08 - 00;20;08;15 email in one day, and I wasn't getting any response from that two or three days. 00;20;08;15 - 00;20;11;23 I was having a whole and we were having this conversation 00;20;11;23 - 00;20;13;28 that people are saying: Man, you made it! You made it! 00;20;13;28 - 00;20;18;21 And I was like, If I made this, I will throw a great party here, right? 00;20;19;01 - 00;20;20;15 And I'll do that. 00;20;20;15 - 00;20;22;27 And then I think Lucas went in 00;20;22;27 - 00;20;26;04 and obviously he was 15, 16 years experience system architect. 00;20;26;04 - 00;20;29;00 Right? And the company only had one position to fill in, so. 00;20;29;01 - 00;20;29;27 Right. Right. 00;20;29;27 - 00;20;35;11 Unfortunately didn't work, so came back to India 00;20;35;14 - 00;20;37;24 all because everything that I you know, bear. 00;20;38;22 - 00;20;38;29 Didn't. 00;20;38;29 - 00;20;43;14 Didn't result in after, but then this thing happened. 00;20;43;14 - 00;20;48;00 Then I also like kind of like go to talk some career gap six months and months 00;20;48;22 - 00;20;51;26 that I want to focus on making this dream that I was applying 00;20;51;26 - 00;20;55;20 to university for my school somewhat rejecting me some were accepting me 00;20;55;20 - 00;20;59;17 some are delaying this that this and I went into a depression 00;20;59;17 - 00;21;04;09 phase literally now my I used to go to my doctor thing 00;21;04;09 - 00;21;07;09 I don't know I don't feel good if I sleep tonight 00;21;07;09 - 00;21;10;21 I might not wake up tomorrow that's how I'm feeling now. 00;21;10;28 - 00;21;13;11 And then he did some medical check ups. 00;21;13;11 - 00;21;15;13 Everything is like, man, you're perfectly OK. 00;21;15;13 - 00;21;18;13 You're just overthinking literally out of, 00;21;18;13 - 00;21;21;05 just facing an anxiety attack or a panic attack or like, 00;21;21;27 - 00;21;24;03 just take these sleeping pills and you should be like. 00;21;24;10 - 00;21;25;06 Yeah, yeah. 00;21;25;06 - 00;21;30;12 That's what like my life came to be like and nobody was there to support me. 00;21;30;12 - 00;21;32;19 Nobody was understanding what I'm trying to do. Right, right. 00;21;32;24 - 00;21;35;00 People are thinking, Hey, this guy has gone crazy. 00;21;35;00 - 00;21;38;16 Like, he has lately quit his job very, very high income. 00;21;38;16 - 00;21;39;24 Good job. 00;21;39;24 - 00;21;43;14 And I don't know, why is it in Canada, what's not there in India? 00;21;43;14 - 00;21;45;14 This is saying, like, if you're earning so well. 00;21;45;14 - 00;21;48;04 But I was like, no they're wrong, you know, 00;21;48;04 - 00;21;53;10 maybe a bigger angle, like thinking long term, like what Canada has to offer. 00;21;54;14 - 00;21;55;17 So yeah, 00;21;55;17 - 00;21;58;19 those other the things, but one thing that kept me going is like, 00;21;59;13 - 00;22;03;28 I knew that Canada may be tough, you know, but it's not impossible. 00;22;04;05 - 00;22;04;23 Yeah. 00;22;04;24 - 00;22;08;10 What happened is, I mean, for me, it was very clear. Like, if one door will 00;22;08;10 - 00;22;11;19 close, I'll open second. Second will close, I'll open the third. 00;22;11;28 - 00;22;14;00 Third ill close, I'll open the forth, but I will not give up. 00;22;14;00 - 00;22;16;26 I shouldn't have about a degree that I do try this road. 00;22;16;26 - 00;22;18;18 I didn't try that road. 00;22;18;18 - 00;22;20;09 I should not have regret in my life. 00;22;20;09 - 00;22;23;02 I was still 28 when 00;22;23;02 - 00;22;24;07 around 27, 28. 00;22;24;07 - 00;22;28;09 I was having my mind set before 29 because the point systems, start to decrease 00;22;28;09 - 00;22;30;23 before going then 30. I need to make this. 00;22;30;23 - 00;22;33;08 I went into full mode, full throttle mode. 00;22;33;08 - 00;22;34;21 I don't want to do this. 00;22;34;21 - 00;22;37;12 So, so so never gave up. 00;22;37;12 - 00;22;41;12 And when things happen, I mean my whole depression, everything went away. 00;22;41;19 - 00;22;45;05 Yeah, right now I'm the most happiest person on earth. 00;22;45;10 - 00;22;47;03 I proudly say that. 00;22;47;03 - 00;22;50;11 And I'm personally satisfied, professionally satisfied, 00;22;50;11 - 00;22;54;09 financially satisfied and all mentally says that everything I, 00;22;54;19 - 00;22;57;15 I couldn't have expected this growth this soon. 00;22;58;01 - 00;22;59;27 I came to grow with the mindset 00;22;59;27 - 00;23;03;15 and even VanHack of kind of set the expectation right. 00;23;04;03 - 00;23;06;18 Like when you are looking for an international job 00;23;06;18 - 00;23;10;21 or you don't have an experience in Canada, don't go to high number, settle 00;23;10;25 - 00;23;13;29 for a bit less when you prove on the job it will happen. 00;23;14;04 - 00;23;17;05 Yeah, we were a bit below. 00;23;17;05 - 00;23;19;20 I mean, I could have made that kind of salary in India, so. 00;23;19;20 - 00;23;22;15 But this was purely dream. No money. 00;23;23;02 - 00;23;23;16 Yeah. 00;23;23;16 - 00;23;27;19 We went in, we did our best when it came to our performance high, 00;23;27;27 - 00;23;31;02 I got almost the best of the best hikes. 00;23;31;14 - 00;23;36;00 You know, it's very rare to see that I was like normal promotion is due, 00;23;36;01 - 00;23;39;19 so could be more like there is no looking back at all. 00;23;39;27 - 00;23;40;20 That's that thing. 00;23;40;20 - 00;23;46;08 I'm so, so proud of my company, my people at this for missing, 00;23;46;08 - 00;23;49;23 you know, like, and especially now, like a lot of different people. 00;23;49;23 - 00;23;52;06 They're just not Canadians. Yeah. The first time. 00;23;52;16 - 00;23;56;14 I can literally from Poland and all it's all over 00;23;56;14 - 00;23;59;21 the world is so much of diversity that this company brings. 00;23;59;22 - 00;24;04;06 And we just I just met my CEO in person during our like last 00;24;04;17 - 00;24;08;10 some event I think was such a nice guy and he's such a nice guy. 00;24;10;01 - 00;24;13;05 So I'm like, it's all inspiration. 00;24;13;05 - 00;24;15;18 Everything is going smooth, smooth and smooth. 00;24;16;04 - 00;24;17;04 Fantastic! 00;24;17;04 - 00;24;18;09 And how about living in Vancouver? 00;24;18;09 - 00;24;19;20 We talked about it a little bit earlier, but 00;24;19;20 - 00;24;21;28 like how was the visa process, the immigration process? 00;24;22;06 - 00;24;24;23 How did you feel when you, you know, your first day arriving at YVR, 00;24;25;00 - 00;24;26;18 how was that whole explored? 00;24;26;18 - 00;24;27;24 That was also super smooth. 00;24;28;01 - 00;24;30;05 I mean, like in February 2021 I got this job, 00;24;30;11 - 00;24;32;09 We started with the work visa, everything. 00;24;32;18 - 00;24;32;26 Yeah. 00;24;32;26 - 00;24;34;13 I mean, I got my work visa 00;24;34;13 - 00;24;38;12 by April 2021 when I had my passport signed with my work visa by April. 00;24;38;21 - 00;24;40;23 Oh, wow. All my dreams, everything. 00;24;41;23 - 00;24;44;10 I think it took 14 days for a little work visa or something. 00;24;44;10 - 00;24;46;24 I mean, within a matter of months, provided 00;24;46;24 - 00;24;49;22 your employer provides all the documents, for the LMIA and everything. 00;24;49;27 - 00;24;53;17 Yeah, it was all done and I think Karan was working or Melissa 00;24;53;18 - 00;24;55;21 was working already actively on that. 00;24;55;21 - 00;24;57;05 Yeah. The Immigration team from VanHack. 00;24;57;05 - 00;24;59;18 So why I had my passport with my visa stand in April. 00;24;59;29 - 00;25;00;11 Yeah. 00;25;00;11 - 00;25;05;19 Now situation game for flight ban, right? During COVID Indian flight 00;25;05;25 - 00;25;09;05 was were banned and people were taking in that groups and all. 00;25;09;19 - 00;25;12;26 So I was like no I don't want to fly from India group 00;25;12;26 - 00;25;15;18 some people are saying go from this close countries. 00;25;15;18 - 00;25;17;23 Some was in Ukraine, some was in Germany. 00;25;17;23 - 00;25;21;29 I'm like, no, no I go with a direct flight, there's a New Delhi to Vancouver 00;25;21;29 - 00;25;26;04 direct flight I'll take that. That happened to open in September 2021 00;25;26;12 - 00;25;29;21 21th ,22th I booked my flight 00;25;29;21 - 00;25;33;16 I'm like the day and the date is opening I'm taking the first will be the. 00;25;33;17 - 00;25;36;06 First, the first seats. Posted. 00;25;36;06 - 00;25;39;19 So I did that first flight that was happening. 00;25;40;04 - 00;25;42;04 I booked the ticket on that. 00;25;42;04 - 00;25;43;02 It got canceled. 00;25;43;02 - 00;25;45;23 We booked for the next year like they rescheduled the travel 00;25;46;12 - 00;25;50;28 and yeah, from there we came and yeah, I spent 00;25;50;28 - 00;25;55;07 plus looking maybe 40 days, the quarantine things and all that in the hotel. 00;25;55;07 - 00;25;57;14 Then I moved to, not complaining about the airbnb 00;25;57;14 - 00;26;00;29 We knew that was so, so good right? 00;26;00;29 - 00;26;02;03 That's why I stayed in Richmond. 00;26;02;03 - 00;26;06;12 I stayed and North Vancouver, I mean all parts of almost the city. 00;26;07;07 - 00;26;11;22 So yeah, then I moved to this place, which is closer to my office as well. 00;26;12;01 - 00;26;14;14 In November, and since then I'm here. 00;26;14;14 - 00;26;15;13 Fantastic. Awesome. 00;26;15;13 - 00;26;16;27 Well, let's finish up with you. 00;26;16;27 - 00;26;19;08 Already gave a lot of tips, but just maybe a few other tips 00;26;19;08 - 00;26;20;15 that you have for other VanHackers 00;26;22;05 - 00;26;23;11 what would you say to them? 00;26;23;11 - 00;26;26;24 So, I mean, I hope I heard the word tip. 00;26;27;07 - 00;26;30;20 I mean, I don't I'm not a person who goes like it's work. 00;26;30;20 - 00;26;34;00 I always I always believe do your work, right? 00;26;34;00 - 00;26;38;14 Do do your work with your integrity, with good intentions. 00;26;38;22 - 00;26;39;11 Yeah. 00;26;39;11 - 00;26;40;12 Everything will come. 00;26;40;12 - 00;26;42;26 It's just a matter of time is just right about you. 00;26;42;27 - 00;26;45;08 Like that opportunity, that strikes. 00;26;45;08 - 00;26;48;02 So given your best, if you'll so it's like 00;26;49;03 - 00;26;51;05 like do practice so well 00;26;51;05 - 00;26;53;18 that when you go for the exam, it doesn't feel like an exam. 00;26;54;13 - 00;26;56;14 So that's my mentality always. 00;26;56;14 - 00;26;59;29 I don't do these things like people giving 10, 15 interviews 00;27;00;08 - 00;27;03;08 mostly do 3, 4 interviews, and then I crack the interviews. 00;27;03;08 - 00;27;06;01 I'm like, I don't do that hundred interviews playing offer and offer. 00;27;06;14 - 00;27;07;13 I don't do that. 00;27;07;13 - 00;27;08;07 Right, right, right. 00;27;08;07 - 00;27;11;24 Well, I give them 100% and that works for me. 00;27;12;02 - 00;27;14;19 So and it's all about individual, right? 00;27;14;19 - 00;27;17;25 Every individual is different, their style is different. 00;27;18;04 - 00;27;21;09 Something that work for me may work for somebody else. 00;27;21;09 - 00;27;23;02 Something may not work for them, right? 00;27;23;02 - 00;27;23;10 Yeah. 00;27;23;10 - 00;27;26;18 So, but ideally I think just be very honest 00;27;26;18 - 00;27;31;15 and like I think how I boil this down, like not just for interview tips 00;27;31;15 - 00;27;34;07 but anything in your life if you want to achieve. Right. 00;27;34;13 - 00;27;37;01 I'm just ask ask a question. 00;27;37;15 - 00;27;39;23 What is it that you want to do 00;27;39;23 - 00;27;42;29 and more importantly, what is it that you don't want to do 00;27;43;28 - 00;27;46;22 Once you have like, I don't want this, right? 00;27;47;16 - 00;27;49;28 Then things become very very clear. 00;27;50;11 - 00;27;53;28 So I ask myself, what is it that I don't want to do? 00;27;54;06 - 00;27;57;10 And there are certain things that I don't want to do these things. 00;27;57;26 - 00;28;02;01 Then I know I was very to doubt that this is where I want to focus on. 00;28;02;19 - 00;28;07;01 And then it will open like a very broader picture to like once you start focusing, 00;28;08;00 - 00;28;12;20 it will open I mean, you might have one, two, three, four ideas at that time. 00;28;13;00 - 00;28;16;09 It will you will literally have 100 ideas just out of that itself. 00;28;16;18 - 00;28;17;25 So focus on that, 00;28;17;25 - 00;28;21;02 a little tips if you really want to have some tips or something. 00;28;21;23 - 00;28;24;24 I would say see these success stories, you know, whenever you're feeling low. 00;28;25;11 - 00;28;29;10 Go, watch these videos and get that strength, right? 00;28;29;11 - 00;28;30;01 Yeah.
