Átila Romero is a Brazilian senior software developer who got a job in Canada through VanHack. We want to share his story with you because his journey puts a smile on our faces. In this video interview, he shared his journey from Brazil to Vancouver and talked about how important it was for him to have mock interviews to practice and prepare for the selection process.
VanHack came into Átila’s life when he had already decided to work abroad but was having a difficult time making it happen. “I tried applying for international jobs directly [with the company]. But I found it hard because I had no idea if they expected me to be in Canada or to move to Canada. I think when you apply most times they assume you live near the place”, he says.

Preparing for an international job interview with VanHack
Before getting hired, Átila went on interviews with different companies and participated in both HR / Cultural fit interviews and technical interviews. VanHack helped him prepare for both types of conversation with recruiters and he says the practice eased his nervousness about talking in English. “I actually had more than one mock interview. [Speaking] English is still something to overcome because it is not my primary language. So the mock interview helps a lot. You don’t get stuck so much and don’t go blank as much, so it’s good”.

From Brazil to Vancouver, the journey to improve language skills
After not doing well on his first English Verification attempt, Átila doubled down on his efforts. He enrolled in classes and would record himself speaking as a way to practice for the real thing. “I would ask questions and think of what I should say, I was inventing conversations”. All this hard work paid off a month later when Átila successfully submitted new videos for the English Verifications.

The next step is permanent residency!
Having been living in Vancouver with his family for a year, Átila is now a permanent resident (PR) of the country. He says adjusting to his new life took some time but that he is more at ease now. “At first it is tense because you don’t know if everything is going to be alright, but now with the PR it gives you peace of mind”.
His advice for other VanHackers trying to get a job abroad is to keep pushing and working hard. He got a few “no’s” before getting the final “yes”, so he would like to tell others not to give up if the first try is not successful. “Persistence is important”, Átila concludes.
