Getting Ready For The Big Break: The Importance Of Completing Your Profile

Before relocating from Nigeria to Canada, Temitope had been a developer for 10 years working with back-end and later full-stack. He had heard of VanHack years before so he knew where to go when it was time to think about working abroad. The first step was signing up and getting his profile just right. “The first thing I did was my profile. Then I did all the tests [Code Challenges] that I could do, with all the languages that I knew would advance my skills”, he says. “And then, I joined the job fair”.

A hiring event was the way from Nigeria to Canada

The job fair is when Temitope’s story picks up momentum, and sharing special turning points like his makes us incredibly happy. He signed up for one of VanHack’s Senior Developer Hiring Event, but his profile and experience were so impressive a recruiter noticed him even before the fair started.

“Funny enough, the company where I work now went to the fair, but they saw my profile like an hour before the event and reached out to me”, Temitope explains. “So I met with my now manager, we had a little interview about my background and we hit it off immediately. I went to the fair proper, and met other companies. But at the end of the event, he reached out to me a second time”.

The international hiring process: technical and cultural interview

Temitope went on to have a number of other conversations with the initial company before getting hired. The international hiring process usually involves technical and cultural interviews, the latter was called HR interview, cultural fit interview, or behavioral interview. So he talked to recruiters, the tech team, and also managers and directors. A few days after going through the different steps of the hiring process, Temitope got the job offer!

Having the opportunity to get to know the company during the interviews, he felt more confident about working with them. “I was excited to move because of the people I met. It wasn’t only about relocating, it was about starting with the right company for me”.

Software developers from Nigeria getting hired abroad

Temitope says he likes reading and researching before he gets involved in anything important. This is what he did before joining VanHack. Seeing other software developers from Nigeria getting hired abroad gave him the final push he needed to start working on his own international career. And now he gets to tell his success story and inspire other candidates, how cool is that!
