At some point during the hiring process, you are going to be asked to explain why you want to take a job abroad and why you want to relocate. The number one thing we tell candidates not to do is reply to these questions with “I want to move to Canada”, (or some other country). The reason why this is the worst answer possible is that it focuses on motives outside of work and has nothing to do with the company interviewing you. So let’s talk about what to say instead?
Candidates will almost always be asked “why do you want to work with us?”. While the correct answer may vary, one is always wrong: saying you want the job to relocate. Your motivation has to be more complex than relocating. A better answer connects your abilities and needs to what the company is looking for.

What to say when asked “why do you want to relocate”
When the recruiter asks you “why do you want to move abroad”, “why do you want to take this job”, or “why do you want to relocate”, the best way to answer is by saying what you’re looking for in Canada that will add to your career.
So first of all, tell the recruiter how the position and the company interest you career-wise and why you believe you are a good match for that opportunity. Secondly, when talking about the country you will be relocating to, make sure to talk about how the move will be beneficial to your career goals.
Explain Why The Job Opportunity Connects With Your Life And Skills
Companies want to hire skilled professionals who will be able to perform certain tasks and solve problems. During the hiring process, you have to show recruiters you are the person they are looking for. The personal reasons that made you decide to move abroad should never be your main answer, but a secondary fact. So even if relocation comes up during the conversation with recruiters, try to connect your answers to the job and not to why you want to move.
“If you’re going to mention relocation, it has to be a consequence of getting the job, not the main reason for talking to the companies”, Priscilla Assumpção, our interview advisor and facilitator explains. “You need to reassure the companies that you are excited about the opportunity and that you are willing to relocate to be there. And it’s a happy coincidence that they are exactly where you want to live. So focus on the position, be specific about what you like. What do you like about the companies, the values, the culture? What did you read in the job description or the website site that you liked? Mention that”.
Do Not Say “I Want To Move To Canada”. Here Are Better Alternatives
Of course you also want to move to another country and live this international experience either alone or with your family, but don’t let this be the only and more important reason. Instead of “I want to move to Canada” you could say:
“Canada has lots of growing opportunity as this is a fast-growing country”
“Canada offer a good quality of life and I feel I can grow my career while having quality time with my family”
“I am looking to move to a place where… (insert your professional expectations here)”
