Professional Background & The International Opportunity
Lucas has been passionate about technology since his high school days. He pursued a comprehensive technology course integrated into his high school curriculum, which paved the way for him to study at a prestigious Federal University in Brazil. During his early professional years, Lucas discovered his love for front-end and back-end development. He excelled in his career, growing from an intern to CTO (Chief Technology Officer) at the same company over almost six years. Through this experience, Lucas honed his leadership skills and gained valuable insights into leading teams.
After achieving remarkable company growth, Lucas realized he was ready for a new challenge and desired to explore international opportunities. He embarked on a remote work journey, initially collaborating with a friend on projects for a US-based company. However, Lucas yearned for exposure to more extensive development teams and diverse areas of the field, which led him to set his sights on Canada.
The Decision to Relocate
Lucas had always dreamt of living in Canada and spent a month studying English in Toronto.
However, he couldn’t pursue further studies due to financial constraints then. Determined to make his dream a reality, Lucas decided to take a step back in his career and adequately prepare himself for an international opportunity with the possibility of relocation. With a mature perspective on life and career, he felt ready to embrace the challenge of living abroad and immerse himself in a new environment.
Challenges in the Job Search
The job search process was a bit challenging for Lucas. Having spent considerable time with one company, he needed more interviewing experience. He had only attended one job interview in the past. The key was to regain confidence, showcase his skills effectively, and convey his ability to handle the job to interviewers. However, with determination and resilience, Lucas persevered and overcame his anxiety.

Participating in pre-interview meetings helped me manage anxiety and gain valuable insights into effective interviewing techniques.

Working Remotely and Relocation
Before relocating, Lucas worked remotely. Nothing new so far since he had had prior experience collaborating remotely with a US-based company. However, adjusting to time zone differences became a challenge.
Lucas also mentioned that the visa/immigration process takes time and it can be very stressful, however, with the constant support of his employer, Lucas received confirmation of his visa approval, bringing him one step closer to realizing his dream.
Luca’s tips for other job seekers is to remain positive, practice resilience, and never give up. The VanHack Academy Program played a vital role in his success, providing him with the necessary tools, resources, and support to excel in his interviews.
