Creating inclusive environments where everyone feels welcomed and celebrated is crucial in a world that thrives on diversity. Vladimir Andrade (he/him), a successful VanHacker who relocated from Brazil to Canada, shares his experiences as a member of the Pride community and highlights the significance of diversity and inclusion. In this blog post, we delve into his journey, discussing workplace dynamics, societal attitudes, and the role of leaders in fostering meaningful change.
From Brazil to Canada

Vladimir is a Product Manager who moved to Toronto, Canada, with his partner, Rafael, last year. Coming from Brazil, he compares the diversity and inclusion initiatives in both countries. While Canada has made significant progress in implementing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in the workplace, Brazil still has room for improvement. Vladimir notes that Brazil, although making strides, needs widespread support systems and dedicated programs for minority communities.
The Power of Diversity in Canada
Practical factors drove Vladimir’s decision to move to Canada. Canada became an ideal choice, with his partner already studying French. Although the United States had been a long-standing dream, Vladimir’s experience working there made him reconsider. Canada’s equal society, culture, and added benefits like healthcare made it an attractive destination.
Vladimir praises Canada for its diversity and multiculturalism. The country’s embrace of diversity positively impacts society as a whole.
“In Canadian workplaces, it is common to find individuals from various backgrounds, skin colors, and gender identities.”
Challenges Faced by the Pride Community in Tech
When discussing the challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community in the tech industry, Vladimir shares his experience. While he has not encountered difficulties finding employment, he acknowledges that his experience may not reflect the broader reality. In Brazil, the tech community remains predominantly composed of cisgender, heterosexual individuals. Efforts to promote diversity and inclusion in the industry are still limited. However, he highlights the increasing role of Generation Z in opening up conversations and pushing for progress.
The Role of Leaders in Promoting Inclusion
As a product manager and a member of the LGBTQ+ community, Vladimir discusses the importance of leadership in promoting diversity and inclusion within companies. As a leader in the tech market, he emphasizes the need for safe spaces and representation to make everyone feel heard and supported.
“Leaders must create an environment where individuals from all backgrounds feel welcome and have equal growth opportunities. Seeing diverse leaders in prominent positions also serves as an inspiration for others to pursue their aspirations.”
Walking the Road of Pride
Vladimir concludes by reflecting on the significance of Pride and the progress made by previous generations. Pride represents the ongoing journey toward equality and acceptance. By recognizing and celebrating the accomplishments of diverse individuals, society can continue to break down barriers and pave the way for future generations.
Vladimir’s journey exemplifies the power of embracing diversity and inclusion in both personal and professional spheres. Together, we can create a world where everyone feels valued and celebrated by fostering diversity, promoting inclusivity, and amplifying underrepresented voices.
