Success Case: How Bruno got hired as a Head of Engineering in Germany

With VanHack, I completed my profile and in less than a week, I started doing interviews. I think I did around four, if I’m not mistaken with VanHack. Then right off, one of them was already the job offer. I think from starting to the end was around one month

Q. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I’m Bruno. I’m a head of engineering now here in Munich, Germany. I have around 16 years of experience, basically with the JavaScript, and Java, and Python, and PHP also.

Q. Was it easier finding a job through VanHack vs. doing it on your own?

The job search before VanHack was a lot of manual steps. I had to look for lots of companies, I had to apply for them, and it was difficult to get a response and so on, so it was kind of a second job to find the job. Started with VanHack, I completed my profile and then less than a week, I started doing interviews. I think I did around four, if I’m not mistaken with VanHack. Then right off, one of them was already the job offer. I think from starting to the end was around one month. This is something that I was really happy about VanHack, because I told you guys that I really wanted to go to Germany. When I got the offer from a company in Germany, in Munich, exactly where I wanted to go, for me it was perfect. I was really, really happy.

Q. That’s great to hear! What about the visa process? Was that easy as well?

The visa process was actually not that difficult. I mean, I just had to put all the documents together. Especially I’m from Brazil, so I had the process of going through the consulate and giving the documents. It was a little bureaucratic, but it had to be done. The company supported me with everything, so that was very easy.

Q. Now that you’re a few months in, how do you like your new job and new country?

Well, I’ve been here now for one year and four months, so there has been a lot going on here. I started as a normal engineer and a couple of months later, I had the challenge of becoming the head of engineering. That’s exactly what I had the experience for, so I really went for it. It was just a matter of really pushing myself to really know the culture here, how things really work. To improve, not only my English, but my German as well, so I really went through it. Actually to get the job was like the first step, and then there is a bigger challenge here.

Q. Do you have any advice for VanHackers that are looking for jobs right now?

If you really want to do it, don’t be just a dreamer like, “Oh, I wish I could go.” Do some actions and really try to work on that. One of the things that I say that is really, really important, is your English. If you don’t have a very good English, it’s going to be really difficult to move on. Even if you get the job, it’s really difficult to communicate with other people. And of course your technical skills should be a match for the job description that you’re applying for.

Q. And do you recommend VanHack?

Well, I’m here in Germany, so absolutely I fully recommend VanHack. Everyone that says, “Oh, I really want to move abroad,” and they really capable of, I just say, “Man, look no further.” Go to VanHack, sign that up. They’re going to match you with some good companies. Even VanHack helps you with the interview process, with the mock interview, with everything, with your English. There is the whole package, so you’re not going to go only if you don’t want to.
