Diversity from Day One
Since the early days of VanHack, we’ve been committed to helping companies build more diverse tech teams to fuel their growth. We really felt the problem of only 26% of computing hired being held by women and men make up significantly more than half of the job applicant pool in tech, while women are still underrepresented 16% of the time.
One of the ways we’ve been able to help is by introducing our Hiring Partners to incredible women in tech.
In fact, in 2017 we started a campaign to help get 17 women hired in the year, but we only found opportunities for 8. We didn’t hit our goal, but it was a step in the right direction and we’ve been working to help create opportunities for women to get hired ever since.
The next 2 events we hosted were our Women in Tech Leap events in Calgary and Toronto in 2018 where 83% (76%) of the participants got hired, 19 out of 25 candidates.
In Calgary, we had 10 hires out of 12 participants.
In Toronto, we had 10 hired out of 19 participants.
Followed by another Women in Tech edition in Toronto in autumn 2019 where 14 candidates found a new opportunity in Canada.
The Leap event was an in person event with women from around the world flying to Calgary and Toronto for in person interviews with companies. This meant that we could only help a small number of people with the event since not everyone can take time off work and travel to another country.
Evolving from in Person to Virtual Events
After COVID, the next logical step was for us to take our hiring fairs online which is what we did in March 2021 with our Women in Tech Virtual Hiring Fair.
It wasn’t an easy transition as we had to manage a ton of “virtual logistics” like testing different event platforms, checking time zones and of course finding great candidates to join the event.
However, one of the biggest advantages of the virtual event is that any candidate or employer can join no matter where they’re from increasing the scope of possible attendees.
We’re excited to say that this event was our largest ever with over 230 candidates and 40 companies participating.
As of now, there have been 20 candidates hired at 7 companies with over 100 interviews still ongoing. We’re super happy to have contributed to the success of these amazing women in tech.
One of the best parts is that the candidates come from all over the world and with a diverse set of skills. VanHackers from 43 countries attended with candidates from Myanmar, Uruguay, Nigeria, Colombia, Brazil, Kenya India and Ukraine accepting offers!
One great example was Priscila, a VanHacker who attended previous events in 2018 and 2019, but just wasn’t ready to get hired.
However this time she was able to get a great offer from a top startup in Halifax, Canada. Check out her excitement on the VanHack Chat:
Happy Hiring Partners
On the employer side, many great companies from across Europe and North America joined the event and hired some great talent.
Sarah Jung from Bench had a great experience at the event: “An amazing event put on by an amazing team! 3 successful hires who we cannot wait to have start with our teams here at Bench.” she said.
Also, Vendasta hired 4 amazing candidates from the event and has hired 26 Senior Software Engineers from VanHack overall.
Celine Martin, Talent Acquisition Manager at Vendasta shared: “Our team absolutely loves taking part in VanHack’s hiring events! Having the opportunity to connect with such high-level, technical talent from around the world has been a major part of our ability to grow our team, technical knowledge, and innovation at Vendasta.”
We’re really proud of the work we’re doing and how far we’ve come in a short amount of time, but we also know there is a lot to be done still and will continue to keep pushing forward.
Our goal until the end of the year is to help 75 women to find a new opportunity.
In fact, we’re hosting another Virtual Hiring Fair, this time for Senior Developers with over 7 years of experience from May 17-19th, you can learn more and sign up for it here.
Congratulations again to all the VanHackers hired and the amazing Hiring Partners who added great new team members!
