About Helio
Meet Helio, a Software Engineer with 9 years of experience with programming languages like C# and PHP and VanHack Premium member. He recently had his Canadian Work Visa approved through the Global Skills program and will share with you how he did it.
He has been working remotely for a Vancouver company called SoftwareKeep. He wanted to move to Canada since he didn’t want to raise his daughter inside this violence they were living here in Brazil.
Why he joined VanHack Premium
He joined VanHack Premium in June 2016 because his wife read about VanHack in a post and there they said they could help him with interview practices, resume reviews and more to help him find a job abroad.
In July 2016, (1 month after he joined VanHack Premium), he received an invite for an interview and 15 days later and after some coding tests he received an offer!
Global Skills Visa Process Documents
His boss offered him to sponsor his Canadian Work Visa and they decide to apply to the Canadian Global Skills Visa. The process was as follow.
- Create Labour Market Benefit Plan: at least 3 things we cloud do to help the Canadian market. I’ll have to train a Junior Canadian Developer
- Committed to grow the company and launch new products in the next 2 years.
- And in another letter, his boss had to explain why he fit for the position like: How much the company grew after I’ve joined and how many Canadians did they hired after this
- The company had to send a lot of financial data like T4, Schedule 100 and 125
- A job description of the position and if we had advertised this position
- Business license
- Certificate of incorporation

Note: Helio did NOT have to take the IELTS or any language test. He did NOT have to get an education equivalency such as WES. He did NOT have to pay a college for his spouse.
Timeline for Global Skills Visa Approval
– Application Submitted July 18th
– They called my boss on July 19th
– They called again on July 31st for a 1:30-hour call
– Received a letter with a Positive Decision on August 1st
– 10 business days from start to LMIA approved.
Next Step: Apply for Work Visa
– Upfront exams booked for family. CAD $150/ per person
– We will apply for the work Permits next week and it will take 10 business days
– Planning to land in Vancouver in August or in the beginning of September
