Irla is a software developer from Brazil whose relocation was some years in the making. However, her initial plans changed when she got pregnant in 2012. She and her husband ended up moving to Canada in 2019 after working and studying in the US. The turning point for her was VanHack’s Leap Event to which she prepared extensively. “I went through a lot of stuff. I had mock interviews, courses, and one-on-one sessions. I got the list of the companies that would join the event and had help studying their cultures and my curriculum to match the job description”. Her dedication paid off and she is currently living in Toronto with her family.

Brazilians Hired in Canada
Designers working with tech will find opportunities in our platform, which was the case for Bianca. The Brazilian UX specialist was hired as an Accessibility Lead in Winnipeg, but her story started in Toronto. After spending some time in the city, Bianca says she fell in love and decided to look for a job in Canada to move to the country permanently. That’s when she found out about VanHack.
Bianca used all the resources available, mock interviews, videos, articles, and eventually got hired and is now preparing to move. The process was not without some stress, of course, but she says, deep inside she had a hunch that it was going to work out fine. “I thought I could fail, but I believed that it was for me, that I could accomplish this”.
She has a straightforward message for other people who are also thinking about working abroad:

Tiago is a data engineer from Brazil who has just started a remote job for Vancouver. He says VanHack was very helpful in guiding him through the hiring process and assisting him in getting a solid profile on the platform.
His first challenge was talking to coworkers in English, over video calls, no less. “Remote meetings are hard even if you have to talk to Brazilians. You always have issues like the internet is slow or their voices are breaking up. So I found it hard to express myself. But they [coworkers] are understanding and welcoming; they know you are not a native English speaker. So after some weeks, I got more confident”, Tiago explains.
