Why Calgary?
VanHack has been working with Calgary Economic Development for some time now. They has been a great partner of ours, and we’ve learnt a lot about the city from them. We thought it only fair that we helped our community learn more about Calgary as well.
Let’s start simple – Did you know that 29% of Calgary’s population migrated from outside Canada? And that Calgary is home to 1.36 million people?
There are nearly 400,000 people in Calgary just like you – people who moved here from all over the world (240 different ethnic origins!). The spirit of the city is warm, welcoming, and very diverse. Did you know that Calgary is the sunniest city in Canada?
Tech Ecosystem in Calgary
Most people reading the VanHack blog are more interested in the tech scene in Calgary. People outside Canada often think that Calgary is all about manufacturing and oil & gas, but did you know that there’s a thriving tech ecosystem in Calgary?
Let’s start with some numbers first:

And we’ve seen this as well. Our Calgary Leap Events are always oversubscribed. Tech companies here are hungry for talent and are actively looking to hire the best developers in the world (and we have 120,000 talented devs on our platform).
