How to Hire Top Performing Software Engineers
JobGet has sourced close to 10 software engineers from VanHack, ranging from FullStack, Front-end, Back-end, QA, and iOS engineers. All of the talent they hired from VanHack are from a global talent pool, which really broadened their horizons during candidate selection. This resulted in their team being able to find really amazing talent that have been top contributors in the company.
Some of the international tech talent they brought onboard have been promoted within a year, as they were excelling in their roles. Billy attributes this to a few strategies in their hiring process.
As a rapidly growing company, they focused on sourcing experienced engineers who were in the middle stages of their careers with a growth mindset. They looked for talent who could go from being great individual contributors and grow into managerial roles, and hit the ground running as soon as they joined.
Another key factor was that JobGet was upfront from the beginning about the opportunities at their company. There were huge opportunities for the company to grow, along with resources and the number of roles opening up. Being transparent in the interview process about these opportunities allowed them to identify people who were high performers, up to the challenge, with the want and curiosity to put in the work needed.
Being able to offer individualized career growth paths was also an important factor in hiring top performing engineers. Instead of forcing their engineers into certain projects or tasks, they focused on finding talent that were actually interested in the work. Billy advises employers to discover what their software engineers are most interested in working on, and then building a great career path around that to secure great talent.
Finding Top Performing Engineers Through the Platform
A large part of JobGet’s ability to hire successfully was due to working with the VanHack team and versatile platform. Out of all the platforms they use for hiring tech talent, they’ve hired the most engineers from VanHack. What makes the VanHack platform so useful in helping them hire top performing engineers?
Firstly, the sheer size of the talent pool, currently at close to 400,000 candidates, allows any employer to tap into a wide pool of diverse tech talent. Hiring internationally without border limitations enabled JobGet to source amazing talent, who joined both as remote and relocation hires.
VanHack’s successful recruitment platform also brings employers the best of both worlds – the ability to self serve and receive personalized assistance at the same time.
Different hiring managers have their unique preferences in reviewing candidates. For Billy, he appreciates being able to proactively reach out to candidates that haven’t applied, and applying filters such as skill sets to look for certain profiles. His experience in reaching out to them has been great as well – the majority of the candidates they reached out to have been very responsive, and moved through the interview process as well.
Apart from using the platform on their own, VanHack’s dedicated Talent Managers also contribute to JobGet’s successful hires. As a dedicated resource for all VanHack employers, the team is there to suggest candidates for roles, walk them through the relocation process after a hire, and provide general recruitment consulting. They acted as an extension of JobGet’s recruitment team, which also helped speed up the turnaround time. Billy was able to review candidates within a day or two of posting jobs, in comparison to industry averages of one to a few weeks of applicants slowly trickling in.
Managing Different Time Zones Across the Company
One of the biggest concerns that companies have with hiring internationally is how to manage different time zones across different teams. Prior to hiring internationally, this was also a perceived challenge – but the biggest takeaway for Billy is to have an open mind.
Issues like handling different time zones and international payroll weren’t actually that big of a problem, as it turns out. JobGet recommends being open and reaching out to candidates to chat – they may already be used to working in North American or European time zones. There are also many resources available on managing different time zones and employees in different countries. The benefits of opening your candidate source up to a global talent pool far outweighs the drawbacks.
