Meet Pedro, a talented full-stack developer with 10 years of experience, who was hired through the São Paulo Recruiting Fair and is now working in Canada a month later.
Pedro now moves on from a public-sector job in Brazil to an exciting opportunity in Winnipeg. As with most candidates looking to get hired from abroad, just sending resumes or not having the opportunity to speak to someone in person is one of the biggest challenges to getting the job. Given that he had a friend in the city, he was able to attend the event without issue. Once he got there, he was quickly impressed with the speed and availability of hiring options as there were many companies interviewing on-site. The hackathon provided many networking and interviewing opportunities and allowed for a personal touch that cannot be achieved without sitting down in person with representatives of the company you’re looking to work for. Additionally, Pedro enjoyed being able to shake a person’s hand, show them his work, and really interact in a way that cannot be achieved without meeting in person.
As he mentions, after the two-day event, things went from 0-100. Pedro was hired very quickly, receiving an e-mail within days letting him know, and after packing up his things he was ready to move within the month.
