How does VanHack help candidates get hired abroad?
Carol Ciriaco: First of all, companies hire us. They explain to us what they are looking for, what kind of candidates, the skills. And then we start our part. The sourcing team works together with the recruitment team on the candidate\’s side.
We start by reviewing candidates. We check their profiles and see if they are a good fit. Sometimes, we make screening calls to evaluate candidates. Our job is to find the best matches for the position. Once we do, the recruitment team shares them with the hiring partners, and they start with the process.
From that point on, the candidate goes through a hiring process. It usually involves code challenges, technical and cultural fit interviews. They may go through interviews with the vice president, or the CTO, or the manager for that role.
So the candidate may ask us, \”so VanHack only helps me in the beginning?\”. The answer is no and this is one of my favorite parts about VanHack. Our advisors help candidates prepare for Interviews. This is important because usually our candidates are trying a job abroad for the first time. Sometimes it\’s even their first interview in English. So you can do a mock interview, a preparation interview, and afterwards, our team will give you feedback on how to better answer some questions, for example.
What are the steps I need to follow to get the most out of VanHack\’s platform?
Carol Ciriaco: The first thing you need to do is register. After that, you will go through the onboarding process, when you fill your profile.
One important piece of advice here: you should fill your profile at VanHack. If you have an account, please fill in all the information. You can add your technical skills, languages libraries, the tools you work with, and so on. This is important because when my team takes a look at the profile the first thing we see is your expertise and experience.
So, ok, register yourself, then the onboarding process, and after that, we have the English verification which is an opportunity for you to record a video and talk a little bit about yourself.
You can also take a code challenge. We have a lot of different code challenges in our library. So you can take different coding challenges that will help you showcase your expertise.
Then, be an active applicant. If you see a job that you think may be a good fit for you, just apply! It\’s super important.
Are VanHack services really free? Are you sure I don\’t need to pay for anything?
Carol Ciriaco: I love this question because my team and I get it every single day. Sometimes people say \”I\’m not sure they will help me for free, there\’s something wrong here\”. This is super important and I want to reinforce it: YES! VanHack is 100% free for candidates. We get paid by the hiring partners, the companies.
Sometimes candidates also ask us if they will need to pay us in case they get hired or during the relocation process. The answer is no. Even if you get tired, even if you get an offer during the whole process, you don\’t need to pay us anything.
We started out as an online school. So we have a paid option. It is not mandatory and also not related to the hiring process. It\’s a premium academy that will help you with courses and online classes. This option is paid. It\’s an extra push. But the recruiting process is 100% free.
What are the tech jobs in high demand right now?
Carol Ciriaco: We have more than 300 job opportunities available right now. But let me share the hottest ones. The top three are machine learning engineers, software engineers with experience with node.js or Golem, and fullstack engineers with expertise in node.js and react.
How will VanHack help me when I get a job abroad?
Carol Ciriaco: You don\’t need to be scared. You\’re not alone and VanHack will support you throughout the whole process. Besides that, some companies also offer benefits like relocation bonus for the first 3 or 6 month when you relocate. So we have different kinds of support. But first and foremost, you will not be alone because we have the Global Mobility Team to help you with the paperwork and all the necessary steps.
This is one of my favorite parts of the work we do here with VanHack. We are not only helping people change jobs, we are helping them change their lives!
What are international companies looking for in candidates? What are the most sought after skills?
Carol Ciriaco: As I said, we have more than 300 job openings so there are many different opportunities! But if I could give you just an overview, I would say candidates need to have a technical background, four or more years of experience, and be able to communicate in English.
In terms of coding skills, we are super open because we have so many opportunities! For example, one day we may be working with a blockchain engineer role and no mobile roles, and two days later we get an opportunity for Android or IOS.
Why is it so important I take the Code Challenges?
Carol Ciriaco: The Code Challenges are not mandatory but when you have one in your profile our clients [the hiring companies] understand that you are engaged in the process. This is the first thing. The second is that you can practice and also show your skills. This is a good way to \”sell yourself\” to the companies. We have so many different code challenges in all the different skills and languages. You can try what you feel more comfortable with.
Let\’s talk about money! What is the average salary for a software developer hired through VanHack?
Carol Ciriaco: We have different salaries depending on years of experience, skills, or job title, if you will be a leader or an individual contributor. So it\’s important to mention that we don\’t have exactly a specific salary for all our job opportunities. But if I would say an average, it would be 120k and 150k Canadian dollars per year.
We have a salary calculator. So if you want to know the average pay for your expertise and years of experience, you can go on the salary calculator and check it.
