We knew nothing about recruiting when we started VanHack in 2015.
In fact, we became a recruiting company by accident. The original idea, and still the core, of VanHack was our soft skills school for tech talent.
We got into recruiting when I started sharing student profiles with friends who were hiring software engineers and they started getting hired. And then they introduced me to their friends who started asking how much it would cost to hire someone from VanHack.
That was in 2016 and we really didn’t know what we were doing. We’d send 100’s of resumes to companies thinking we were helping them, when in fact we’d just be flooding them with unqualified resumes and wasting their time.
I could go on and on about the many mistakes, but one interesting thing started happening. We started needing to process the candidate profiles, understand them better.
In short, we needed an ATS, an Applicant Tracking System.
However, when we started looking around the market for what was available, nothing really stood out. This was because we also needed a LMS combined with our ATS to be able to manage our students and then help them get hired. It was also because a lot of the software out there was meant for large enterprises with huge price tags of $250,000 a year or more.
As we dug more into it we realized that there are an incredible amount of options available in the ATS market. Great companies like Greenhouse, Lever, Jobvite, Workable, iCMS, Breezy and many, many, many others.
All of these platform are great, but we kept hearing complaints from our customers about how they didn’t quite do what they wanted and also about the high price tag.
So, after 5 years of building our own internal ATS, we’ve decided to open it up to the world to launch a robust, easy to use and most importantly free ATS.
