I applied for a couple of jobs before the help of VanHack and I didn’t get the jobs. And then with VanHack on my first interview I went through and I’m here now. VanHack did help us on getting hired abroad. Now my wife is really happy here. We’re happy in Canada and it’s a completely different life. And I encourage everyone to give it a shot because it’s everything amazing.
Q. Tell us a little bit about yourself.
My name is Vinicius. I’m from Brazil. I’m a software developer. I have close to 12 years of experience, mostly with .NET, C#, and some experience also with C++.
Q. Great, thanks. So what prompted your move to Canada? And how did it all happen?
My wife and I, a couple of years ago, we decided to move abroad and we started looking at places, and we really liked Canada. We decided to move here. So we joined VanHack and the experience was always the best for us.
I saw this job position here at Montreal, where we had the perfect match for my skills to the position. The interview process started with HR. VanHack helped me a lot on that. After that, I was able to talk with my (now) manager during a technical interview.
Q. What was the technical interview like?
It was with the manager and the architect of the company. I had to code a little bit during the interview. I had to share my screen and they asked me to develop a small algorithm so they could see that I could code and see my trend of thought while I’m operating with logic and stuff like that. Everything went well.
Q. That sounds good. What did you think about Montreal? Do you need to know French in order to live here?
We started researching about the city and everything, about public transit, and how nice it would be to create kids in the future? We got all this European atmosphere here in the city, which is pretty nice. So we ended up falling in love with Montreal for many reasons. And we’re very happy here. A common worry that people have by coming here to Montreal is, “I don’t speak French. How am I going to live there? Is it possible to live there only by speaking English?” I would say that it’s perfectly possible. I don’t speak French, yet. I do intend to study French. But for now I’ve been living here for six months and I only speak English. In the end, if you intend to immigrate, to stay here, to live here in Quebec or in Montreal, you better learn French eventually.
Q. Any tips for other VanHackers?
My greatest tip for other VanHackers to have success I would say is resilience. I applied for a couple of jobs before the help of VanHack and I didn’t get the jobs. And then with VanHack on my first interview I went through and I’m here now. VanHack did help us on getting hired abroad. Now my wife is really happy here.
