Petrus Silva, Premium Academy member since 2016, is the most excited person we’ve ever met! He’s a cloud architect with a mission to spread the message of automation information to the world. For VanHackCON 2021, Petrus compiled and analyzed data about 2700+ DevOps job opportunities posted on LinkedIn. Here’s what he found in how to pursue a DevOps career in Canada.

DevOps Career in Canada

DevOps goes by many names

If you don’t notice many job openings for DevOps out there, it could be because they go by different names sometimes. Silva urges candidates to see beyond the “disguises” and apply anyway, even if it looks like it’s just not for you at first sight. (It is!). Some of the job titles for DevOps are Cloud engineer, DataOps, DevNet, DevSecOps, and many others. “Ignore the job titles,” Silva says.

“What matters is what you do, your day-to-day activities, your background, and your experience.”

What is the tech in high demand?

Silva found that the number one expertise requested for the DevOps job is cloud knowledge and experience on his sample research on LinkedIn. So make sure to let your cloud certifications and projects are front and center in your profile. One surprising factor he noticed was that many companies also look for candidates with Azure listed as a skill.

The most popularly listed job opportunities are Python, Bash, and Powershell when it comes down to tools. The latter two are especially important for senior positions.

As for locations with high demand for DevOps professionals in Canada, Silva found 53% of job openings he analyzes on LinkedIn were about positions in the Ontario Province. The second most popular location was Quebec, with 26%.

Hacking the interview

With 21 years of experience working in the IT industry and being a VanHacker himself, Petrus Silva share some of his ideas about a successful job interview for DevOps opportunities.

  • Be authentic: Pay attention to how you sell yourself, do not overstate
  • Be humble: Openly admit when you don’t know something
  • Do your homework: Learn about the company and its success cases
  • Socialize: Even if you can’t meet in person, online events can be significant for networking
  • Prepare good questions: Ask technical questions about the job description
  • Be active: Having a repository, blog posts, and videos will make a good impression.
  • Don’t be shy: Ask VanHack’s team questions.
