Q. Hi! Tell us a little bit about yourself and AON3D

I’m Nicholas Nadeau, I’m the engineering manager at AON3D. We are from Montreal, Quebec, Canada and we do high performance 3D printers for the industrial manufacturing space.

Q. Great, thanks. Has it been difficult finding developers for your company?

So the Montreal market for hiring developers has been pretty tough in the past years, it’s definitely a seller’s market, it’s been very hard to find, especially senior candidates,finding anybody with five plus years of experience has been very difficult to even get into a room and interview them.

Q. And we were able to help you out, right?

Working with VanHack, I was pretty amazed that out of the gate we had people with 15 plus years of experience. I would say that a good 60-80% of our candidates were phenomenal, and it wasn’t the shotgun approach that a lot of recruiters tend to take with candidates and suggestions.

Q. Do you have any tips for hiring managers to help them maximize their chances of getting a great candidate?

Definitely the best tip for hiring is come with a good set of questions and simplify the job descriptions such that it really makes it easier for, you know, selecting the candidates, picking the candidates, and making the most out of the weekend.

Q. Thanks! Any final words for us?

I have definitely had a lot of fun with VanHack, it has definitely brought a multicultural approach to our hiring, and has helped us explore other cultures, other places, other avenues for recruitment that are, you know, not our typical Montreal ecosystem.

We’ve been participating in the Leap events, this is our first time down for a mission and it’s been pretty eye-opening seeing what else is out there in the world and having them help us find these people and recruit these people from areas we wouldn’t have otherwise had access to.
