We Granted 30 Scholarship for Women in Tech

The tech world is still male-dominated and we want to help make it more diverse. That\’s why we offered the Scholarship For Women in Tech in our VanHack Premium Academy for 30 skilled tech talents. Now we are happy to announce that the grantees have been selected and are currently part of our community. And they come from seven different nationalities!

All the 30 female software developers and other tech talents selected for the scholarship program will have 100% free access to over 40 hours of content for three months. Our Premium Academy is a learning and consulting initiative that offers preparation for tech talents who want to get hired abroad. Members get an all-in-one learning platform with LIVE classes about technical and behavioral interviews, profile reviews, an exclusive networking group, and more.

The grantees\’ profile

The VH Scholarship for Women in Tech picked 30 professionals who identify as women and were not previously a member of the VH Academy. When it comes to skills, most of them are Fullstack developers (9) or Frontend engineers (8). The other 13 grantees are Backend engineers, mobile engineers, QA engineers, and engineer managers.

Helping more women get tech jobs abroad

Women make up less than 20% of the students in our Academy. The number reflects the tech market in general, but we wanted to change that.

Camila Ferreira, our Premium Academy Business Manager, explains that the scholarship goal is to increase women\’s representation and provide them with unique preparation. \”With the training we want to help them have more confidence and be prepared, with all the skills necessary, to get an international opportunity. We want to empower these women to participate in hiring processes equally and feel confident enough to do so\”, says Camila.

Breaking bias! Changing stereotypes that hurt women in tech

Helping women achieve the confidence they need to venture into the international tech world is important. That\’s because sometimes confidence is the only thing standing between a woman and her next amazing career move.

Studies have shown that women tend to talk themselves out of tech jobs before they even submit their applications. This comes from a LinkedIn Gender Insights Report, which reveals that women apply for 20% fewer jobs than men — despite having similar search behaviors. Unlike male candidates, females will only apply to jobs if they’re 100% confident about their qualifications. As a result, only 25% of all tech-based jobs were held by women.

Can we change this together?

Camila explains that that\’s what the scholarship hopes to achieve. \”What this program is offering is the opportunity for women to prepare themselves and to understand how the international selection process works. [The grantee] will have our team\’s support with organizing her profile and preparing for interviews. She will know what to expect [from the hiring process] and will learn how to present her projects with confidence. We want her to feel empowered to participate in hiring processes without fear. Some women think they are not enough, but in fact, they are!\”

You are enough and we will help you showcase that

Yes! We believe you are enough! So it\’s important to emphasize that the Scholarship program is not meant to \”produce\” skilled female tech talents for the market. They are already out there! All we are doing here is empowering them and giving them a little push.

We believe that preparation is key to building an international career. We have helped over 1800 tech talents around the world get jobs abroad by providing them with the tools they need to succeed during the hiring process. What we are doing now is offering an extra dose of preparation for amazing, talented, and hard-working women.

\”The program helps identify the strengths they already have and how women can best showcase them during international hiring processes\”, Camila explains.

Strong role models change the world and inspire other women

It\’s hard walking into a path you don\’t see other peers taking. Women don\’t see themselves in the tech world so they are less inclined to choose this career. This creates a cycle. By offering more women the opportunity to take up space, we hope they will also attract others to the industry.

\”We want to have more women in this market and increase representation. We believe that the more role models we have in the market, the more women will feel confident to pursue the same path\”, Camila underlines.
