How we present ourselves to the world is an essential part of who we are. Gender is one aspect of our identity that we often overlook but shouldn’t. We made some changes in your platform to make it easier for VanHacker to express their full selves by choosing the pronouns that better express you.
Whether you identify as transgender, cisgender, non-binary, gender non-conforming, or other options, you can now pick your preferred pronoun when filling in your profile on VanHack’s website. The adjustment was made to make our platform more inclusive.
Come as you are
We may slip into wrong assumptions by only focusing on a person’s names or what they wear, and mistakes like that can be very hurtful. Interpreting people based on their appearance or aspects of someone’s identity is an outdated way of getting to know new people. It’s time we create more room for everyone to express themselves freely, and we think getting rid of gender labels is one way we can do that.
Gender in Canada
According to a report by Statistics Canada, in Canada, about one million people identify as members of the LGBTQ+ community. That means around 4% of the Canadian population over the age of 15 is gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, Two-Spirit, or identify with another non-binary gender or sexual identity (LGBTQ2+).
If the acronym “LGBTQ2” seems new to you, that’s because it is. It has been recently adopted by the Government of Canada across its programs and policies. The term is officially used to reflect the broad scope of gender and sexual identities in society.
Supporting different identities
We believe in everyone’s right to feel free and respected in their skin. At VanHack, we want to create a safe environment for everyone to thrive. So tell us your preferred pronoun, and let’s hack together.
